John D. MacDonald: The Green Ripper

John D. MacDonaldin romaani The Green Ripper ilmestyi alunperin 1964, ja nyt se on saatavina e-kirjana Helmet-järjestelmästä (Random House, 2013; ISBN 978-0-307-82679-4).

Teoksen esipuheen on kirjoittanut Lee Child, ja oikeastaan tuli mieleen että kirjan voisi olla kirjoittanut Child eikä MacDonald, siinä määrin se muistutti Childin Reacher-kirjasarjaa. Tai olisiko niin päin, että Child on aika lailla ottanut mallia MacDonaldin teoksista?

Romaanin päähenkilö on Travis McGee, ja tämä on sarjan 18. teos. Kirjan mielialat ovat synkkiä, MacDonald pohdiskelee kasvuun perustuvan elämäntavan rajallisuutta, sitä että maapallo ei kestä enää pitkään tätä menoa. Aikamoisen ajankohtaista ajattelua lähes 50 vuotta sitten ilmestyneessä kirjassa:

"Should I pack?"

"Go ahead. Scoff. What the sane people and sane governments are trying to do is scuffle a little more breathing space, a little more time, before the collapse."

"How much time have we got?"

"If nobody pushes the wrong button or puts a bomb under the wrong castle, I would give us five more years at worst, twelve at best. What is triggering it is the crisis of reduced expectations. All over the world people are suddenly coming to realize that their children and grandchildren are going to have it worse than they did, that the trend line is down. So they want to blame somebody. They want to hoot and holler in the streets and burn something down."

McGeen naisystävä Gretel työskentelee parantolassa, jossa tapahtuu jotain kummallista, mutta ennen kuin asiaan tulee selvyyttä, Gretel sairastuu äkillisesti ja kuolee pian sairaalassa. Kirjan nimi viittaa kuolemaan:

And on the way home she would explain to me how she had outwitted the green ripper. I had read once about a little kid who had overheard some adult conversation and afterward, in the night, had terrible nightmares. He kept telling his people he dreamed about the green ripper coming to get him. They finally figured out that he had heard talk about the grim reaper. I had told Grets about it, and it had found its way into our personal language. It was not possible that the green ripper had gotten her.

Not possible.

Kun käy ilmi, että Gretel oli päässyt jonkinlaisen salaliiton jäljille ja tullut tämän takia myrkytetyksi, McGee lähtee kostoretkelle, liftaten Kaliforniaan jossa omituinen uskonlahko on pitänyt leiriä. Mutta nyt leirissä on jäljellä enää muutaman hengen iskujoukko, joka yrittää houkutella salanimellä esiintyvän McGeen mukaan juoniinsa:

Barry had been trained in Cuba by the DGI and had been a weapons instructor at Baninah near Benghazi in Libya. Chuck had trained at a camp near Al-Ghaidha in South Yemen, along with people from the IRA. Sammy had trained in the U.S. Marine Corps and later in the Cuban training center near Baghdad, where the famous Carlos was an adviser. Persival interrupted to give Carlos's correct name, Ilyich Rameirez Sanchez. Stella had been in the Weather Underground and had trained in their mountain camp in Oregon, and later in Bulgaria.

"How," I said heavily, "how these great people get to go so many crazy places inna worl' anyhow?"

"We selected them, Brother Thomas. We tested them, and we selected them, and we sent them away to be trained and come back to us. We sent them as delegates, most of them, to the World Peace Council meetings in Helsinki, or the World Federation of Democratic Youth in Budapest. You see only a few here. There are scores of them, Brother Thomas. Travel is easily arranged for them. The Church provides the funds, of course. They are pledged to make this a better world. They are saviors of mankind."

Romaani käy huomattavammasti kovemmilla kierroksille kuin aiemmin lukemani McGee-sarjan teokset, siinä määrin että paikka paikoin meno tuntui tarkoituksellisen raa'alta. Aiemmissa lukemissani sarjan kirjoissa on ollut enemmän huumoria ja monipuolisempi maailmankuva kuin tässä, joka tuntui tavattoman mustavalkoiselta.
