Mary Balogh: Someone to wed

Helmetin e-kirjoista löytyi Mary Baloghin historiallinen viihderomaani, jossa rikas nainen etsii itselleen puolisoa ja löytää sellaisen epätoivon partaalla olevasta aatelismiehestä: Someone to wed (Jove, 2017; ISBN 978-0-3995-8606-4).

Romaanissa on keikautettu rakkausromaanin asetelmia osittain päälaelleen, vaikka melko lailla tyypillinen lajinsa edustaja teos onkin. Balogh osaa kirjoittaa melkolailla uskottavia henkilöhahmoja, mistä plussaa.

Humphrey Westcott, Earl of Riverdale, has died, leaving behind a scandalous secret that has put his legal heir, Alexander, in a most precarious position.

When Alexander Westcott becomes the new Earl of Riverdale, he inherits a title he never wanted and a failing country estate he cant afford. But he fully intends to do everything in his power to undo years of neglect and give the people who depend on him a better life.

A recluse for more than twenty years, Wren Heyden wants one thing out of life: marriage. With her vast fortune, she sets her sights on buying a husband. But when she makes the desperate and oh-so-dashing earl a startlingly unexpected proposal, Alex will only agree to a proper courtship, hoping for at least friendship and respect to develop between them. He is totally unprepared for the desire that overwhelms him when Wren finally lifts the veils that hide the secrets of her past.

Mary Balogh: Heartless

Mary Baloghin romaani tuli aikoinaan luettua painettuna kirjana, mutta sitten se löytyi e-kirjana, enkä ensin tajunnut lukeneeni romaanin jo aiemmin: Heartless (Berkley Books, 1995; ISBN 978-0-698-15630-2).

Toisella lukemalla romaani tuntui edelleenkin melko kevyeltä tarinalta, mutta mukana on vakavampiakin sävyjä, jopa siinä määrin että mietin olinko aiemmin lukenut kirjaa loppuun asti. Ei hassumpi viihderomaani taitavalta kirjoittajalta.

Life has taught Lucas Kendrick, Duke of Harndon, that a heart is a decided liability. Betrayed by his elder brother, rejected by his fiancée, banished by his father, and shunned by his mother, Luke fled to Paris, where he became the most sought-after bachelor in fashionable society.

Ten years later, fate has brought him back home to England as head of the family who rejected him. Unwilling as he is to be involved with them, he must assume responsibility for his younger siblings, the family estate he once loved—and the succession. He faces the prospect of marrying with the greatest reluctance—until he sees beguiling Lady Anna Marlowe across a ballroom one night.

Anna, far from being the bright-eyed innocent Luke takes her for, is no more a stranger to the shadows of a painful past than he is. But for her, marriage cannot so easily solve what is wrong in her life—not when a tormentor stalks her to the very doors of Bowden Abbey, where Luke and Anna must learn to trust in each other or risk any chance they may have for a happy future.

Mary Balogh: The gilded web ja Web of love

Mary Baloghin Web-romaanisarjan kaksi ensimmäistä osaa ovat The gilded web ja Web of love, eikä myöhempiä teoksiä käsittääkseni Helmetin kautta ole saatavissakaan.

Teokset ovat kirjailijan uran alkupään tuotantoa, uusintapainoksina julkaistuja. Mitään erityisen omaperäistä kummassakaan romaanissa ei ole tarjolla, mutta vaatimattomista lähtökohdista kirjailija saa aikaan helppolukuista tekstiä jossa on omanlaatuista huumoria mukana.

The gilded web (Bantam Dell, 2006; ISBN 978-0-440-24306-9)

Susan Krinard et al: Noiduttu Jane

Jane Austenin klassikot on muokattu uusiin fantasialla höystettyihin kuoseihin neljässä pienoisromaanissa: Noiduttu Jane (Harlequin, 2011; ISBN 978-91-640-8326-5).

Alkuperäiset tarinat ovat Ylpeys ja ennakkoluulo, Neito vanhassa linnassa, Emma ja Viisasteleva sydän. Kirjassa on näistä seuraavat versiot:

  • Susan Krinard: Ylpeys ja ennakkoaavistus
  • Colleen Gleason: Neito vampyyrilinnassa
  • Janet Mullany: Emman noitapiiri
  • Mary Balogh: Viisastunut sydän

Mitenkään erityisen omaperäisiksi tarinoita ei voi sanoa. Ilmeisesti teoksen ideana on ollut saada jotain myytävää kaupan hyllylle.

Mary Balogh: Simply perfect

Mary Balogh lopettaa neliosaisen Simply-viihderomaanisarjan tähän teokseen: Simply perfect (Piatkus, 2009; ISBN 978-0-7499-0909-3).

Romaanisarjan kussakin osassa päähenkilönä on tyttökoulun opettajatar, ja juonet muistuttavat suuresti toisiaan, siinä määrin että teokset on helppo sekoittaa keskenään.

Set against the seductive backdrop of Regency England, New York Times bestselling author Mary Balogh’s latest novel sweeps us into the sensual, enthralling world of an elite academy for young ladies. Mary Balogh kirjoittaa moniosaisia kirjasarjoja, joissa saman kaltaiset juonenkulut tapahtuvat uudestaan ja uudestaan, esimerkkinä romaani jossa sodassa haavoittunut mies pyrkii eroon menneisyyden painolastista: Only enchanting (Piatkus, 2014; ISBN 978-0-349-40536-0).

Mary Balogh: One Night for Love ja A summer to remember

One Night for Love (Dell, 1999; ISBN 0440226007)

It was a perfect morning in May...

Neville Wyatt, Earl of Kilbourne, awaited his bride at the altar—when a ragged beggar woman raced down the aisle instead. The cream of the ton saw him stare, shocked, then declare that this was his wife! One night of passion was all he remembered as he beheld Lily, the woman he'd wed, loved, and lost on the battlefield in Portugal. Now he said he'd honor his commitment to her—regardless of the gulf that lay between them.

Then Lily spoke her mind...

She said she wanted only to start a new life—wanted only a husband who truly loved her. She had to leave him to learn how to meet his world on her terms. So Lily agreed to earn her keep as his aunt's companion and study the genteel arts. Soon she was the toast of the ton, every inch a countess fit for the earl, who vowed to prove to his remarkable wife that what he felt for her was far more than desire, that what he wanted from her was much more than ... One Night for Love.

Mary Balogh: Slightly married jne.

Mary Balogh on kirjoittanut historiallisia viihderomaaneja kymmenittäin, ja monet niistä muodostavat kirjasarjoja. Yksi sarjoista kertoo Bedwynin suvusta. Kirjojen otsikoissa on kaikissa sana "slightly", ja ne lienee paras lukea järjestyksessä, sillä samoja hahmoja esiintyy useammassa tarinassa. Melko hyvin Balogh tarinoita pyörittää, ja historiallinen ajankuvakin tuntuu kohtalaisen uskottavalta.

Slightly married (Piatkus, 2003; ISBN 978-0-7499-3753-9)

Meet the Bedwyn: six brothers and sisters—men and women of passion and privilege, daring and sensuality…Enter their dazzling world of high society and breathtaking seduction, where each will seek love, fight temptation, and court scandal and where Aidan Bedwyn, the marriage-shy second son, discovers that matrimony may be the most seductive act of all.

Like all the Bedwyn men, Aidan has a reputation for cool arrogance. But this proud nobleman also possesses a loyal, passionate heart—and it is this fierce loyalty that has brought Colonel Lord Aidan to Ringwood Manor to honor a dying soldier's request. Having promised to comfort and protect the man's sister, Aidan never expected to find a headstrong, fiercely independent woman who wants no part of his protection…nor did he expect the feelings this beguiling creature would ignite in his guarded heart. And when a relative threatens to turn Eve out of her home, Aidan gallantly makes her an offer she can't refuse: marry him...if only to save her home. And now, as all of London breathlessly awaits the transformation of the new Lady Aidan Bedwyn, the strangest thing happens: With one touch, one searing embrace, Aidan and Eve's “business arrangement” is about to be transformed into something slightly surprising.

Slightly wicked (Piatkus, 2010; ISBN 978-0-7499-3754-6)

With his laughing eyes and wild, rakish good looks, Lord Rannulf Bedwyn is a hard man to resist. To Judith Law, a woman in need of rescue when her stagecoach overturns, Rannulf is simply her savior, a heroic stranger she will reward with one night of reckless passion before she must become a companion to her wealthy aunt. Imagine Judith's shock when the same stranger turns out to be among England's most eligible bachelors…and when he arrives at Harewood Grange to woo her cousin. Certainly, they had made no vows, no promises, but Rannulf never did forget his uninhibited lover…nor did she forget that one delicious night. And as scandal sets the household abuzz, Rannulf proposes a solution…but when Judith refuses to have him—in love or wedlock—Rannulf has only one choice: to wage a campaign of pure pleasure to capture the heart of the woman who has already won his.

Slightly scandalous (Piatkus, 2010; ISBN 978-0-7499-3755-3)

Growing up with four unruly brothers made Lady Freyja Bedwyn far bolder than most society ladies. On a visit to Bath, Joshua Moore bursts into feisty Freyja's room, entreats beauty with tumbling hair to hide him. The hell-raiser, Marquess of Hallmere, asks her to pose as his fiancée, to thwart family matchmaking. The plan is perfect, until passion blindsides both.

Slightly tempted
(Piatkus, 2009; ISBN 978-0-7499-3786-7)

From the moment he spies Lady Morgan Bedwyn across the glittering ballroom, Gervase Ashford, Earl of Rosthorn, knows he has found the perfect instrument of his revenge. But wedlock is not on the mind of the continent’s most notorious rake. Nor is it of interest to the fiercely independent Lady Morgan herself…until one night of shocking intimacy erupts in a scandal that could make Gervase’s vengeance all the sweeter. There is only one thing standing in his way: Morgan, who has achieved the impossible—she’s melted his coolly guarded heart. For Gervase, only the marriage bed will do, but Morgan simply will not have him. Thus begins a sizzling courtship where two wary hearts are about to be undone by the most scandalous passion of all: glorious, all-consuming love.

Slightly sinful (Piatkus, 2009; ISBN 978-0-7499-3787-4)

When the four lady residents of a brothel in Brussels lose their life savings to a confidence man, their friend Rachel York, who introduced him to them, feels responsible even though all her money has been stolen too. She vows to help them recover their savings, but in order to do that she needs to get her hands on the jewels she will inherit at the age of twenty-five. And in order to do that, she needs to acquire a husband--fast.

Enter Lord Alleyne Bedwyn, who is recuperating at the brothel from wounds sustained at the Battle of Waterloo. Alleyne may have lost his memory, but he has not lost any of the dash and devilry that had always characterized him as the youngest Bedwyn brother. Although he needs to go off in search of his identity, he cannot resist embroiling himself in intrigue with Rachel first--especially when doing so seems ever so slightly sinful.

Slightly dangerous (Piatkus, 2004; ISBN 978-0-7499-3772-0)

All of London is abuzz over the imminent arrival of Wulfric Bedwyn, the reclusive, cold-as-ice Duke of Bewcastle, at the most glittering social event of the season. Some whisper of a tragic love affair. Others say he is so aloof and passionless that not even the greatest beauty could capture his attention.

But on this dazzling afternoon, one woman did catch the duke’s eye—and she was the only female in the room who wasn’t even trying. Christine Derrick is intrigued by the handsome duke…all the more so when he invites her to become his mistress.

What red-blooded woman wouldn’t enjoy a tumble in the bedsheets with a consummate lover—with no strings and no questions asked. An infuriating lady with very definite views on men, morals, and marriage, Christine confounds Wulfric at every turn. Yet even as the lone wolf of the Bedwyn clan vows to seduce her any way he can, something strange and wonderful is happening. Now for a man who thought he’d never lose his heart, nothing less than love will do.

With her trademark wit, riveting storytelling, and sizzling sexual sparks, Mary Balogh once again brings together two polar opposites: an irresistible, high-and-mighty aristocrat and the impulsive, pleasure-loving woman who shows him what true passion is all about. A man and a woman so wrong for each other, it can result only in the perfect match.

Mary Balogh: The suitor jne.

Mary Balogh on urakoinut uskomattoman määrän historiallisia viihderomaaneja, ja niitä löytyy kirjastosta melkoinen pino. Lainasin toistakymmentä kirjaa, ja luin niitä läpi, hyppien yli kiusallisimmat kohdat.

Balogh osaa kirjoittaa, mutta toisaalta hän toistaa kirjasta toiseen suunnilleen samaa reseptiä, toisiinsa vetoa kokevasta pariskunnasta joiden onnen tiellä on kasa väärinkäsityksiä ja muita esteitä. Toisaalta kirjoissa on paikka paikoin uskottavan oloista historiallista ajankuvaa, eikä teksti kovin pahasti takkua, paljon kömpelömmälläkin tekstillä on bestseller-listojen kärkeen ylletty.

Moneen kirjaan liittyy todellisia historiallisia tapahtumia, jotka alkoivat siinä määrin kiinnostaa että Wikipediaa tuli selattua lukemisen ohessa romaanien taustojen selvittämiseksi.

The suitor (Random House Publishing Group, 2013; ISBN 978-0-345-54532-9)

If circumstances were different, Philippa Dean would be happy to fall in love with Viscount Darleigh. He is certainly the perfect gentleman and everything her parents want: titled, handsome, respectable. His blindness only reinforces his quiet power and strength. But Philippa does not love him. Her heart is already taken and there is only one thing she can do: Thwart the matchmaking plans. Julian Crabbe is desperate to rescue the woman he fell in love with two years ago. Then, he was a reckless cub, justly earning Philippa's parents' scorn. Now, he is every inch a respectable suitor and determined to prove it before it is too late. Intrude on the viscount's house party? Gladly. Interrupt the match of the season? Happily. For nothing can stop the power of a love that will not be denied.

Simply unforgettable (Piatkus, 2005; ISBN 978-0-7499-3688-4)

They meet in a ferocious snowstorm. She is a young teacher with a secret past. He is the cool, black-caped stranger who unexpectedly comes to her rescue. Between these two unlikely strangers, desire is instantaneous…and utterly impossible to resist. Stranded together in a rustic country inn, Lucius Marshall, who is the Viscount Sinclair, and Frances Allard share a night of glorious, unforgettable passion. But Frances knows her place–and it is far from the privileged world of the sensual aristocrat. Due to begin her teaching position at Miss Martin’s School in Bath, Frances must try to forget that one extraordinary night–and the man who touched her with such exquisite tenderness and abandon.

But Frances cannot hide forever. And when fate once again throws them together, Lucius refuses to take no for an answer. If Frances will not be his wife, he will make her his mistress. So begins an odyssey fraught with intrigue, one that defies propriety and shocks the straitlaced ton. For Lucius’s passionate, single-minded pursuit is about to force Frances to give up all her secrets–except one–to win the heart of the man she already loves.

Once again this incomparable storyteller captures a time and a place like no other. And in Lucius and Frances, Mary Balogh gives us her most unlikely lovers yet–a nobleman in search of the perfect wife and an unconventional woman willing to risk everything for an unforgettable love.
