Kuitenkin englanninkielinen alkuperäisteos löytyy e-kirjana Helmetin kautta: A purple place for dying (Random House, 2013; ISBN 978-0-307-82727-2).

She took the corner too fast, and it was definitely not much of a road. She drifted it through the corner on the gravel, with one hell of a drop at our left, and then there was a big rock slide where the road should have been. She stomped hard and the drift turned into a rough sideways skid, and I hunched low expecting the white Alpine to trip and roll. But we skidded all the way to the rock and stopped with inches to spare and a great big three feet between the rear end and the drop-off. The skid had killed the engine.

"What a stinking nuisance!" Mona Yeoman said.

It is all functional, of course. But it is like what we have done to chickens. Forced growth under optimum conditions, so that in eight weeks they are ready for the mechanical picker. The most forlorn and comical statements are the ones made by the grateful young who say, Now I can be ready in two years and nine months to go out and earn a living rather than wasting four years in college.

Education is something which should be apart from the necessities of earning a living, not a tool therefor. It needs contemplation, fallow periods, the measured and guided study of the history of man's reiteration of the most agonizing question of all: Why? Today the good ones, the ones who want to ask why, find no one around with any interest in answering the question, so they drop out, because theirs is the type of mind which becomes monstrously bored at the trade-school concept. A devoted technician is seldom an educated man.

John D. MacDonald: Cinnamon Skin

Teos on Travis McGee -sarjan toiseksi viimeinen.

There are no hundred percent heroes.

Every man can be broken when things happen to him in a certain order, with a momentum and an intensity that awaken ancient fears in the back of his mind. He knows what he must do, but suddenly the body will not obey the mind. Panic becomes like an unbearably shrill sound.

No, onneksi meillä on Travis McGee, joka pistää asiat ojennukseen, peloista huolimatta.

Walking back through the mall to the exit nearest our part of the parking lot, we passed one shop which sold computers, printers, software, and games. It was packed with teenagers, the kind who wear wire rims and know what the new world is about. The clerks were indulgent, letting them program the computers. Two hundred yards away, near the six movie houses, a different kind of teenager shoved quarters into the space-war games, tensing over the triggers, releasing the eerie sounds of extraterrestrial combat. Any kid back in the computer store could have told the combatants that because there is no atmosphere in space, there is absolutely no sound at all. Perfect distribution: the future managers and the future managed ones. Twenty in the computer store, two hundred in the arcade.

Ei hassummin ennustettu vuonna 1982. Ja tässä pohdintaa kuntoilusta:

The body was shaped by the need to run long distances on resilient turf, to run very fast for short distances, to climb trees, and to carry loads back to the cave, so any persistent exercise you do which is not a logical part of that ancient series of uses is, in general, bad for the body. A succession of deep knee bends is destructive, in time. As are too many pushups. As is selective muscle development through weightlifting. As is jogging on hard surfaces. A couple of years of such jogging and you are very likely never to walk in comfort again. Man is a walking animal, perfectly designed for it. The only more efficient human energy use is the bicycle.

Romaani liikkuu öljynporausteollisuuden parissa, ja pommi-iskussa kuollut Norma oli ollut varsinainen velho tähän liittyvässä tietojenkäsittelyssä, josta MacDonald kirjoittaa hyvinkin tietäväiseen tapaan:

The thing is, she had a knack of sensing what was pertinent information and what was junk. With all the pertinent data in the computer, it could draw you a map of the subsurface structures that was clean and pretty, without anomalies that give you questionable areas. Norma put us out front of a whole mob of little exploration companies. She could take the series of computer maps and go into a trance, dreaming of what the earth was like at that place once upon a time, and she'd put down a little red circle with an N inside it. Her mark. Drill here. [...]

John D. MacDonald: The Green Ripper

"Should I pack?"

"Go ahead. Scoff. What the sane people and sane governments are trying to do is scuffle a little more breathing space, a little more time, before the collapse."

"How much time have we got?"

"If nobody pushes the wrong button or puts a bomb under the wrong castle, I would give us five more years at worst, twelve at best. What is triggering it is the crisis of reduced expectations. All over the world people are suddenly coming to realize that their children and grandchildren are going to have it worse than they did, that the trend line is down. So they want to blame somebody. They want to hoot and holler in the streets and burn something down."

McGeen naisystävä Gretel työskentelee parantolassa, jossa tapahtuu jotain kummallista, mutta ennen kuin asiaan tulee selvyyttä, Gretel sairastuu äkillisesti ja kuolee pian sairaalassa. Kirjan nimi viittaa kuolemaan:

And on the way home she would explain to me how she had outwitted the green ripper. I had read once about a little kid who had overheard some adult conversation and afterward, in the night, had terrible nightmares. He kept telling his people he dreamed about the green ripper coming to get him. They finally figured out that he had heard talk about the grim reaper. I had told Grets about it, and it had found its way into our personal language. It was not possible that the green ripper had gotten her.

Not possible.

Barry had been trained in Cuba by the DGI and had been a weapons instructor at Baninah near Benghazi in Libya. Chuck had trained at a camp near Al-Ghaidha in South Yemen, along with people from the IRA. Sammy had trained in the U.S. Marine Corps and later in the Cuban training center near Baghdad, where the famous Carlos was an adviser. Persival interrupted to give Carlos's correct name, Ilyich Rameirez Sanchez. Stella had been in the Weather Underground and had trained in their mountain camp in Oregon, and later in Bulgaria.

"How," I said heavily, "how these great people get to go so many crazy places inna worl' anyhow?"

"We selected them, Brother Thomas. We tested them, and we selected them, and we sent them away to be trained and come back to us. We sent them as delegates, most of them, to the World Peace Council meetings in Helsinki, or the World Federation of Democratic Youth in Budapest. You see only a few here. There are scores of them, Brother Thomas. Travel is easily arranged for them. The Church provides the funds, of course. They are pledged to make this a better world. They are saviors of mankind."

John D. MacDonald: Bright Orange for the Shroud

Jatkoin John D. MacDonaldin dekkareiden lukemista, päähenkilönä Travis McGee. Tämä romaani on 21-osaisen kirjasarjan kuudes: Bright Orange for the Shroud (Random House, 2013; ISBN 978-0-307-82667-1). Alunperin teos ilmestyi vuonna 1965.

Arthur fell back into my life on that Tuesday afternoon. Acquaintance rather than friend. The dividing line is communication, I think. A friend is someone to whom you can say any jackass thing that enters your mind. With acquaintances, you are forever aware of their slightly unreal image of you, and to keep them content, you edit yourself to fit. Many marriages are between acquaintances. You can be with a person for three hours of your life and have a friend. Another one will remain an acquaintance for thirty years.

John D. MacDonald: Darker Than Amber

Jostain syystä minulta oli kokonaan jäänyt huomaamatta tämmöinen John D. MacDonaldin kirjoittama dekkarisarja, päähenkilönä Travis McGee. Tämä romaani on 21-osaisen kirjasarjan seitsemäs: Darker Than Amber (Random House, 2013; ISBN 978-0-307-82668-8). Alunperin teos ilmestyi vuonna 1966.

These two angles show up everywhere in his novels: the need to-maybe reluctantly, possibly even grumpily-stand up and be counted on behalf of the weak, helpless, and downtrodden, which included people, animals, and what we now call the environment-which was in itself a very early and very prescient concern: Janice Gantry, for instance, predated Rachel Carson's groundbreaking Silent Spring by a whole year.

But the good knight's armor was always tarnished and rusted. The fight was never easy and, one feels, never actually winnable. But it had to be waged. This strange, weary blend of nobility and cynicism is MacDonald's signature emotion. Where did it come from? Not, presumably, the leafy block where he was raised in quiet and comfort. The war must have changed him, like it changed a generation and the world.

Tunnetuin MacDonaldin romaani on The Executioners, joka on kahteen kertaan tehty elokuvaksi (Cape Fear).

So where did McGee and MacDonald's other heroes come from? Why Florida? Why the jaundiced concerns? We will never know. But maybe we can work it by mining the millions of words written with such haste and urgency and passion between 1945 and 1986.

McGee yrittää saada selvyyttä mistä oikein on kyse, eikä pelastetun naisen tarina tunnu kaikilta osin ihan paikkansa pitävältä.

John D. MacDonald: Vaarallista kiiltoa

Englanninkielinen teos on nyt kuitenkin saatavilla Helmetistä e-kirjana: The deep blue good-by (Random House, 2013; ISBN 978-0-307-82725-8).

I am tall, and I gangle. I look like a loose-jointed, clumsy hundred and eighty. The man who takes a better look at the size of my wrists can make a more accurate guess. When I get up to two twelve I get nervous and hack it back on down to two oh five. As far as clumsiness and reflexes go, I have never had to use a flyswatter in my life. My combat expression is one of apologetic anxiety. I like them confident. My stance is mostly composed of elbows.

The breakfast was rather silent, but not with strain.

After pouring second coffees, she sat and looked at me and said, "I'm being a hell of a problem to you, Trav."

"I worry about it every minute."

"Thank you for patience and endurance. You have won the Lois Award."

"Hang it with my other plaques."

"I watched the dawn from your sun deck. It was a nice one, with thunderheads. I came to the astonishing conclusion that I better not try to give anything until I've built up something to give. Otherwise, it's just taking."

"In the morning I'm often anti-semantic."

"Any future aggression, if there is any, will have to be yours."

"Sounds valid."

She looked at me with gentle indignation. She was what we have after sixty million years of the Cenozoic. There were a lot of random starts and dead ends. Those big plated pea-brain lizards didn't make it. Sharks, scorpions and cockroaches, as living fossils, are lasting pretty well. Savagery, venom and guile are good survival quotients. This forked female mammal didn't seem to have enough tools. One night in the swamps would kill her. Yet behind all that fragility was a marvelous toughness. [...]
