The Elements of Photography: Understanding and Creating Sophisticated Images

Angela Faris Belt on kirjoittanut oppikirjan valokuvaajille, sellaisille jotka haluavat tehdä oman portfolion ja haluavat ymmärtää syvällisemmin, miten valokuva syntyy ja toimii: The Elements of Photography: Understanding and Creating Sophisticated Images (Focal Press, 2008; ISBN 978-0240809427). Sain teoksen käsiini e-kirjana Helmet-järjestelmästä, eikä sen lukeminen ihan mahdotonta ollut tietokoneen näytöltä.

Kirja palvelee kahta yleisöä, niitä jotka opiskelevat valokuvauksen teknistä taitoa opistoissa ja vastaavissa opinahjoissa, ja niitä jotka opiskelevat taidevalokuvuausta. Beltin mukaan kumpikin lähestymistapa on puutteellinen.

Teknillisiä taitoja painottavassa koulussa unohdetaan valokuvauksen sisältöön liittyvän tradition merkitys: "[Photographers] are undereducated in the areas of photography and art history, visual literacy, critical theory, and aesthetics. These indispensable aspects of photographic study simply do not permeate most technical school curricula."

Vastaavasti taidevalokuvauksen opetuksessa unohdetaan itse valokuvan ottamisen taito:

On the other side of the educational spectrum, photography programs situated within Fine Art Departments emphasize the communicative nature of photographs — their content, theoretical and historical positioning, and meaning — but they do so often at the expense of time spent practicing the medium's technical/mechanical side — its equipment and materials and their specifications, benefits, and limitations. The students of these programs produce images filled with intelligence, insight, passion, and depth, much of which is often lost owing to sheer lack of sophisticated technical accomplishment. Again, to quote Misha Gordin, “The blend of a talent to create a concept and the [technical] skill to deliver it," is the necessary balance of ingredients for making successful photographs.

Toisin sanoen näkemystä löytyy mutta työkalujen käyttöä ei hallita: "[T]hey may have volumes of insight to share with the world about a subject, but they lack the proper tools needed to successfully convey it to others."

Kirjan lähtökohta on kiinnostava, mutta jotenkin tuntui mekanistiselta tämä kokonaisuus, vähän kuin tässä tuunattaisiin myyntikelpoiseksi tavaraa jonka joku on tuottanut.

Sinänsä kyllä kiinnosti kirjan neljän kokonaisuuden lähtökohta, eikä tämä kirja vailla ansioita ole, nämä ovat kaikki valokuvaajan kannalta kiinnostavia asioita:

This book identifies and examines four elements inherent to every image created through the action of light. These elements are: the photographic frame and its borders; quality of focus as determined by the aperture or lens; shutter speeds and their effects in relation to time and motion; and the physical media used to create the aggregate image. These elements do not operate in a hierarchical or sequential manner; they each play a unique role as they combine to form a coherent visual statement. This book explains the nature of these four elements of photographic grammar as well as how to control them technically; it demystifies their visual outcomes; and it examines their compositional, communicative, and conceptual implications.

Toisaalta sitten on sanottava, että oma lähestymistapani valokuvaukseen on melko lailla päinvastainen kuin tässä kirjassa kuvattu, en ole kiinnostunut kuvien (tai valokuvaportfolioiden) tekemisestä myyntikelpoiseksi, vaan valokuvan ottaminen on tapa pysähtyä katsomaan maailmaa, mielellään niin että tietoinen mieli hiljenee ja kuva tulee otetuksi vaistonvaraisesti, niin ettei asiaa tarvitse ajatella.

Silti, teos oli kiinnostava, ja kyllä sitä voi suositella kaikille jotka ovat valokuvauksesta ja valokuvan ottamisesta vähänkin enemmän kiinnostuneita.
