Grace

Ihmisen vaikeudesta sopia tähän maailmaan kertoo T. Greenwood romaanissaan Grace (Kensington, 2012; ISBN 978-0758250926). Kirjan ensimmäinen tekstikappale on säväyttävä, ehkä liiankin kanssa, sellainen että se sai kirjaa lukemaan, mutta muutaman kymmenen sivun jälkeen oli pakko lopettaa, en jaksanut tässä junassa joka oli matkalla kohti yhä synkempiä maisemia.

Ja pakko on tähän laittaa tuo kirjan ensimmäinen kappale, suorastaan jouluinen tunnelma joka äkkiä jähmettyy:

Kurt is suddenly aware of the way the snow looks like something living, like something with a purpose. He has always thought of snow as simply falling from the sky, at mercy to gravity. But now, as he marches out across the snow-covered field behind the house, his rifle drawn and aimed at the back of his only son's head, he sees that it is intent in its falling. Resolute, determined, even calculated in its descent.

Kirja kertoo perheestä, jonka elämästä on tullut monessa mielessä taistelua. Tulevaisuudelle asetetuista odotuksista on tullut pettymyksiä. Samalla toimeentulo on muuttunut epävarmaksi, kun vanha tapa ansaita elantonsa ei enää päde:

He'd never seen her as happy as the night he took her into town for dinner at Hunan East and gave it to her in its velvet case, like he was proposing for the first time. But not even a week later, it was as though it had always been on her finger, and the gratitude and joy it had brought seemed to evaporate. It shamed him now how much he spent. It shamed him that he'd mortgaged their future for that flimsy moment of happiness. Because now they were upside down on the house, and despite the state-of-the-art computer system, the website, the salvage yard was barely surviving. And on top of all that, they had to figure out what to do about Trevor and how to keep Pop from losing his house. Christ. Even if his legs weren't like live wires, he doubted he'd be sleeping.

Greenwood kirjoittaa hyvin, mutta raskas tämä tarina on, enkä tosiaankaan jaksanut sen kyydissä kovin pitkälle. Amazon.com-palvelussa kirja oli saanut neljä tähteä, eli hyviä arvioita, mutta monet olivat myös kokeneet kirjan lukemisen vaikeaksi samalla tavalla kuin minä.
