Sofia Samatarin romaani löytyi Helmetistä e-kirjana, enkä osannut odottaa teokselta paljoakaan: A stranger in Olondria - being the complete memoirs of the mystic, Jevick of Tyom (Small Beer Press, 2013; ISBN 978-1-931520-77-5).
Ajattelin että luen romaania vähän matkaa jotta tiedän mistä siinä on kyse, arvellen ettei se tule juurikaan kiinnostamaan. Mutta miten kävikään: luin teoksen läpi käytännössä yhdellä istumalla, mitä nyt aika ajoin nousin hetkeksi ylös kävelemään ja miettimään mitä tarinassa oikein tapahtuukaan.
Romaanissa on fantasia-aineksia, mutta sillä tavalla käsiteltynä etteivät fantasiaelementit piilota romaanin varsinaista sanomaa, kysymystä siitä mistä elämässä on kyse, mistä kirjallisuudessa on kyse ja mitä tarkoittaa ymmärtää toista ihmistä.
Jevick, the pepper merchant's son, has been raised on stories of Olondria, a distant land where books are as common as they are rare in his home. When his father dies and Jevick takes his place on the yearly selling trip to Olondria, Jevick's life is as close to perfect as he can imagine. But just as he revels in Olondria's Rabelaisian Feast of Birds, he is pulled drastically off course and becomes haunted by the ghost of an illiterate young girl.
