John Sandford: Dark of the moon

John Sandfordin jännärissä selvitetään pikkukaupungissa tapahtunutta murhatapausta, jossa rikoksen uhrista ei juuri mitään hyvää sanottavaa löydy: Dark of the moon (Pocket Books, 2008; ISBN 978-1-84739-185-8).

Virgil Flowers — tall, lean, late thirties, three times divorced, hair way too long for a cop's — had kicked around a while before joining the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension. First it was the army and the military police, then the police in St. Paul, and finally Lucas Davenport had brought him into the BCA, promising him, "We'll only give you the hard stuff."

He'd been doing the hard stuff for three years now — but never anything like this.

In the small town of Bluestem, where everybody knows everybody, a house way up on a ridge explodes into flames, its owner, a man named Judd, trapped inside. There is a lot of reason to hate him, Flowers discovers. Years ago, Judd had perpetrated a scam that'd driven a lot of local farmers out of business, even to suicide. There are also rumors swirling around: of some very dicey activities with other men's wives; of involvement with some nutcase religious guy; of an out-of-wedlock daughter. In fact, Flowers concludes, you'd probably have to dig around to find a person who didn't despise him.

Richard Calvocoressi: Lee Miller - portraits from a life

Richard Calvocoressi on koonnut kokoelman Lee Millerin valokuvista, sellaisista joissa kohteena on ihminen: Lee Miller - portraits from a life (Thames & Hudson, 2005; ISBN 0-500-28522-5).

Lee Miller is possibly the 20th century's most famous woman photographer. During her extraordinary life, she came into contact with a wide range of people including many of the most celebrated and influential artists, writers, actors, fashion designers and socialites of the last century. The photographs include not only Pablo Picasso, Max Ernst, Dora Maar, Igor Stravinsky, Henry Moore, Colette, Marlene Dietrich, Fred Astaire and a host of others, but also pictures of unsung individuals engaged in war work. Most memorable of all are Miller's pictures of victims and perpetrators of Nazi oppression - some of the most powerful images from the last century. These brilliant portraits are shown together for the first time. Throughout the book, Richard Calvocoressi demonstrates the originality and artistry of Miller's work, while exploring the relationship between the photographs and her fascinating life.

Rikoskonstaapeli Barbarotti toipuu suuresta surusta.

Becky E. Conekin: Lee Miller in fashion

Tämä on jo neljäs kirjastosta lainaamani teos jossa kerrotaan Lee Millerin elämästä. Becky E. Conekin onnistuu tuomaan esille uusia näkökulmia aiheeseen, keskittymällä siihen millä tavalla Miller liittyy muodin historiaan, kameran kummallakin puolella: Lee Miller in fashion (Thames & Hudson, 2013; ISBN 978-0-500-51691-1).

Teoksessa on elämänkerrallisten aineksien kohdalla melkolailla kertausta verrattuna muihin Lee Milleristä kertoviin kirjoihin, mutta kieltämättä muotiin keskittyvä näkökulma nostaa esiin uusia puolia Millerin elämästä. Toisaalta näkökulman suppeus myös rajaa pois asioita joita muissa elämänkerroissa on käsitelty, ja näin ollen tarjoaa suhteellisen kapean välähdyksen kohteensa elämään.

Lee Miller was a Vogue cover girl, Man Ray's lover, the first photojournalist at the liberation of Dachau and Buchenwald, and one of the most important female photographers of the 20th century. Combining fine art and urban wit, her photographic technique was learned from the great photographers of her day, among them are Edward Steichen, Man Ray and George Hoyningen-Huene.

Sofia Samatar: A stranger in Olondria - being the complete memoirs of the mystic, Jevick of Tyom

Sofia Samatarin romaani löytyi Helmetistä e-kirjana, enkä osannut odottaa teokselta paljoakaan: A stranger in Olondria - being the complete memoirs of the mystic, Jevick of Tyom (Small Beer Press, 2013; ISBN 978-1-931520-77-5).

Ajattelin että luen romaania vähän matkaa jotta tiedän mistä siinä on kyse, arvellen ettei se tule juurikaan kiinnostamaan. Mutta miten kävikään: luin teoksen läpi käytännössä yhdellä istumalla, mitä nyt aika ajoin nousin hetkeksi ylös kävelemään ja miettimään mitä tarinassa oikein tapahtuukaan.

Romaanissa on fantasia-aineksia, mutta sillä tavalla käsiteltynä etteivät fantasiaelementit piilota romaanin varsinaista sanomaa, kysymystä siitä mistä elämässä on kyse, mistä kirjallisuudessa on kyse ja mitä tarkoittaa ymmärtää toista ihmistä.

Jevick, the pepper merchant's son, has been raised on stories of Olondria, a distant land where books are as common as they are rare in his home. When his father dies and Jevick takes his place on the yearly selling trip to Olondria, Jevick's life is as close to perfect as he can imagine. But just as he revels in Olondria's Rabelaisian Feast of Birds, he is pulled drastically off course and becomes haunted by the ghost of an illiterate young girl.
