Connie Brockway: As you desire

Connie Brockwayn historiallinen viihderomaani on yksi uskomattomimpia paketteja kummallisia juonenkäänteitä mitä olen käsiini saanut: As you desire (A Dell Book, 1997; ISBN 978-0-440-22199-9).

Tarina on melkoisen kaavamainen huolimatta Egyptin tarjoamista eksoottisista puitteista. Päähenkilöt ovat sillä lailla sopivasti tyhmiä että onnellista loppua odotellessa riittää väärinkäsityksiä ja kommelluksia taatusti kylliksi.

Kidnapped, drugged, and about to be sold to the highest bidder, Desdemona Carlisle is having a hell of a time maintaining her English pride. Then she sees the man in black, galloping through the Egyptian desert on a pure white steed. Desdemona could not have conjured a more dashing savior in her wildest fantasies. But an unlikelier hero would be impossible to find: Harry Braxton is a rogue, a scoundrel, and a born opportunist—who has already broken Desdemona’s heart once before.

As brilliant as she is beautiful, Desdemona still hasn’t learned how to stay out of trouble—which suits Harry just fine. Running from a painful past, and rumored to be involved in nefarious endeavors, Harry will never be a proper match for Desdemona. But when she catches the eye of his cousin, the irritatingly honorable Lord Blake Ravenscroft, Harry vows to claim his one true desire, once and for all.

Sarah Maclean: A Scot in the dark

Tulin lainanneeksi Sarah Macleanin historiallisen viihderomaanin kahteen kertaan, ensin e-kirjana ja sitten painettuna, johtuen siitä että kirjojen kansikuvat poikkesivat kovasti toisistaan: A Scot in the dark (Piatkus, 2016; ISBN 978-0-349-40974-0).

Lonesome Lily turned Scandalous Siren Miss Lillian Harwood has lived much of her life alone in a gilded cage, longing for love and companionship. When an artist offers her pretty promises and begs her to pose for a scandalous portrait, Lily doesn't hesitate ...until the lying libertine leaves her in disgrace. With the painting now public, Lily has no choice but to turn to the one man who might save her from ruin.

Highland Devil turned Halfhearted Duke The Duke of Warnick loathes all things English, none more so than the aristocracy. It does not matter that the imposing Scotsman has inherited one of the most venerable dukedoms in Britain - he wants nothing to do with it, especially when he discovers that the unwanted title comes with a troublesome ward, one who is far too old and far too beautiful to be his problem. Tartan Comes to Town Warnick arrives in London with a single goal: get the chit married and see her become someone else's problem, then return to a normal, quiet life in Scotland. It's the perfect plan, until Lily declares she'll only marry for love ... and the Scot finds that there is one thing in England he likes far too much...

Stuart Franklin: The documentary impulse

Stuart Franklin pohtii kirjassaan dokumentaarisuutta, niitä syitä minkä takia ihmiset valokuvaamalla ja muilla tavoin haluavat dokumentoida kokemustaan maailmasta: The documentary impulse (Phaidon Press, 2016; ISBN 978-0-7148-7067-0).

Kirjassa on yllättävän vähän valokuvia ottaen huomioon että kirjoittaja on tunnettu ja arvostettu valokuvaaja. Painopiste on tekstissä, eikä teksti niinkään pudottele esiin faktoja kuin tuo esille dokumentaarisuuden eri muotoja - ja sokeita pisteitä.

Kuuluisasta Tiananmenin aukiolla Pekingissä ottamastaan valokuvasta Franklin kirjoittaa melkeinpä väheksyvästi, korostaen tilanteen eri ulottuvuuksia, ja samaten sitä miten tapahtumat noteerattiin julkisuudessa eri puolilla maailmaa. Todellisuudessa on monia sävyjä ja värejä.

Award-winning photographer Stuart Franklin's exploration of how we, as humans, are driven to visually document our experiences and the world around us. Stuart Franklin took one of the most powerful photographs of the twentieth century - the 'tank man' in Tiananmen Square, Beijing, 1989.

From his insightful position as a photographer, Franklin explores why we are driven to visually document our experiences and the world around us. He focuses on photography but traces this universal need through art, literature and science. Looking at photojournalism, war photography and work recording our culture, Franklin identifies some of its driving impulses: curiosity, outrage, reform and ritual, the search for evidence, for beauty, for therapy, and the immortalization of memory. As our understanding of 'documentary' continues to expand, Franklin considers photographic staging - where, perhaps, the future of the genre may lie: in search of truth over fact.

"This book traces what I shall call the documentary impulse. Here I mean the passion to record, with fidelity, the moments we experience and wish to preserve, the things we witness and might want to reform, or simply the people, places or things we find remarkable... Photography (and journalism) practised respectfully has the power to educate us all towards a greater understanding and empathy towards others." -Stuart Franklin

Han Kang: The vegetarian

Romaani voitti Man Booker International -palkinnon vuonna 2016.

Yeong-hye and her husband are ordinary people. He is an office worker with moderate ambitions and mild manners; she is an uninspired but dutiful wife. The acceptable flatline of their marriage is interrupted when Yeong-hye, seeking a more 'plant-like' existence, decides to become a vegetarian, prompted by grotesque recurring nightmares.

In South Korea, where vegetarianism is almost unheard-of and societal mores are strictly obeyed, Yeong-hye's decision is a shocking act of subversion. Her passive rebellion manifests in ever more bizarre and frightening forms, leading her bland husband to self-justified acts of sexual sadism. His cruelties drive her towards attempted suicide and hospitalisation. She unknowingly captivates her sister's husband, a video artist. She becomes the focus of his increasingly erotic and unhinged artworks, while spiralling further and further into her fantasies of abandoning her fleshly prison and becoming - impossibly, ecstatically - a tree.

Fraught, disturbing and beautiful, The Vegetarian is a novel about modern day South Korea, but also a novel about shame, desire and our faltering attempts to understand others, from one imprisoned body to another.

Elizabeth Strout: Olive Kitteridge

Elizabeth Stroutin romaani sai Pulitzer-palkinnon vuonna 2009, ja melkoisesti romaanissa on potkua, enemmän kuin sen 270 sivua tuntuisivat aluksi pitävän sisällään: Olive Kitteridge (Pocket Books, 2008; ISBN 978-0-7434-6772-8).

Teos on kokoelma löyhästi toisiinsa kytkeytyviä novelleja.

Olive Kitteridge might be described by some as a battle axe or as brilliantly pushy, by others as the kindest person they had ever met. Olive herself has always been certain that she is 100% correct about everything - although, lately, her certitude has been shaken. This indomitable character appears at the centre of these narratives that comprise Olive Kitteridge. In each of them, we watch Olive, a retired schoolteacher, as she struggles to make sense of the changes in her life and the lives of those around her - always with brutal honesty, if sometimes painfully. Olive will make you laugh, nod in recognition, as well as wince in pain or shed a tear or two. We meet her stoic husband, bound to her in a marriage both broken and strong, and her own son, tyrannised by Olives overbearing sensitivities. The reader comes away, amazed by this authors ability to conjure this formidable heroine and her deep humanity that infiltrates every page.
