Trudi Canavan tarjoaa nuorehkoille lukijoille suunnatun fantasiaromaanin, jossa slummissa asuvalta tytöltä löytyy yllättäen kykyä taikuuteen: The magicians' guild (Orbit, 2004; ISBN 1-84149-313-9).
Kaikenlaista kirjallisuutta sitä löytyykin kirjaston palautushyllyistä, tätäkään en luultavasti olisi osannut kaivata ennen kuin kansi osui silmiini. Canavan kirjoittaa monipolvista, paikoin jopa saivartelevaa tekstiä, josta puolet tuntui olevan turhaa ja epäolennaista, puhumattakaan juonesta paljastuneista aukoista, mutta siitä huolimatta romaani tuli luettua nopeasti, sillä jonkinlaista omaperäisyyttä ellei jopa nokkeluutta kirjoittajalta myös löytyy. Kaikki ei ole ihan sitä miltä näyttää.
