Johanna Lindsey: Stormy Persuasion

Johanna Lindseyn historiallisessa viihderomaanissa on myrskyisää tunnelmaa: Stormy Persuasion (Corgi Books, 2015; ISBN 978-0-552-17069-7).

Teos kuuluu Malory-kirjasarjaan, jossa sattuu ja tapahtuu kaikenlaista, ja tuntuu että tapahtumia on siinä määrin ettei ihmishahmoista synny pintaa syvempää käsitystä.

When Judith Malory sets sail from London to attend the debutante ball of her Malory cousin in Connecticut, she little thinks that she will encounter on the high seas the handsome Nathan Tremayne, a sea captain and wanted smuggler. Nathan, on a secret mission to win his freedom, finds himself being blackmailed by the lovely Judith, but the tables are turned as he rescues her from danger. In the intense and sultry Caribbean heat, Nathan will fight with all his mettle to win the right to her heart.

Johanna Lindsey: Make me love you

Johanna Lindseyn historiallisessa viihderomaanissa kaksi sukua taistelee keskenään, ja naimakaupalla yritetään saada sopua aikaan: Make me love you (Headline Eternal, 2017; ISBN 978-1-4722-3382-0).

One duel could be considered a matter of honour, but three duels are attempted murder. With enlightened society outraged at such reckless behaviour among young noblemen, the Prince Regent orders Robert Whitworth, the earl of Tamdon's heir, and Lord Dominic Wolfe to end their dispute by allying their families through marriage. Whichever party refuses to comply will forfeit his lands and title.

Whitworth relishes the idea of sending his younger sister Brooke to his enemy's remote estate. He knows the Wolf will reject her as a bride, thereby losing his wealth and status. The Wolf, however, is determined to scare away the Whitworth chit. With duelling no longer an available means of destroying the man he abhors, he will be satisfied to see him lose his lands and title. But he hadn't expected his enemy's sister to be so resourceful or resilient.

Brooke Whitworth has been dreaming of her first Season in London because she intends to win a husband who will take her far away from her unloving family. Instead, she is being sent to the Yorkshire moors to wed a mysterious nobleman whose family is cursed and who has thrice tried to kill her brother. But there's no room in her heart for fear; this man is her means of escape. She will make him love her.

Johanna Lindsey: Wildfire in his arms

Johanna Lindsey tarjoaa viihteellistä romantiikkaa revolverisankareiden maailmassa: Wildfire in his arms (Headline Eternal, 2016; ISBN 978-1-4722-3379-0).

Kirjassa riittää monenmoista käännettä, kun rikollisia tuomiolle kuljettava seriffi joutuu selvittelemään syyttömäksi itseään väittävän naisen keksimiä konnankoukkuja.

A dangerous gunfighter. A beautiful outlaw. A thrilling pursuit. Degan Grant is heading to California, far away from the home he wants to forget, when a US Marshal calls in a favour. Degan has to apprehend three outlaws and turn them over to the law - easy enough for a man no one wants to tangle with. But one of the outlaws defies Degan's every expectation. Maxine is sassy, spirited - and insists she is innocent. And, knowing that her capture will lead to her hanging, she's determined to escape the handsome, enigmatic gunfighter.

Rogue-aiheisia viihderomaaneja

Luettuani joltisenkin määrän historiallisia viihderomaaneja huomasin, että tietyt sanat toistuvat teosten otsikoissa, erityisesti sanat rogue, rake ja scoundrel. Niinpä tein Helmetissä haun hakusanalla rogue, ja aikamoisen pitkä lista näitä romaaneja kirjastosta löytyi, ja pitihän niitä lainata luettavaksi.

Rogue on suomennettavissa sanoilla kelmi, konna, roisto, veijari, kulkuri, villi, veitikka, kontrolloimaton, filuri ja niin edelleen, eli kyseessä on romaanihahmo jossa on koomisiakin piirteitä, ja melkoisessa määrin huijarin vikaa.

Näissä historiallisissa romaaneissa termi viittaa kyseenalaista mainetta saaneeseen yläluokan edustajaan, sellaiseen joka vehkeilee ja juonittelee saadakseen asiat järjestettyä haluamallaan tavalla. Ja haluamista näissä romaaneissa on useimmissa yllinkyllin, kovin isoa päiväannosta tällaista kirjallisuutta ei kerta kaikkiaan jaksa nautiskella.
