Luin jo aiemmin Courtney Milanin novellin Talk sweetly to me (NLA Digital LLC, 2014; ISBN 978-1-937248-22-2), mutta niin vain päädyin lukemaan sen uudestaan.



Historiallisen novellin päähenkilö on tummaihoinen nainen, Rose Sweetly, joka sattuu olemaan matemaattinen lahjakkuus ja tekee töitä tähtitieteen parissa laskien planeettojen ja muiden taivaankappaleiden ratoja. Stephen Shaughnessy puolestaan on tunnettu kolumnisti, joka ei matematiikasta tiedä juuri mitään.

Teoksen kaksi päähenkilöä käyvät ikään kuin keskinäistä shakkipeliä, siirto seuraa toistaan ja tilanteet muuttuvat. Huomiota pakeneva seinäruusu huomaa joutuneensa huomion keskipisteeksi. Milan leikittelee sukupuolten rooleilla muutamassa kohdin melkolailla herkullisesti, ja yllätyksiä on luvassa runsaasti.

Harmi että luin tämän romaanin vasta kun olin kirjasarjan muut teokset jo lukenut, joten osasin jo osin arvata millaisia juonen kuvioita on luvassa. Tosin täytyy myöntää että pariin otteeseen kirjailijan lukijalle antamat vihjeet jäivät autuaasti huomaamatta. Romaanin voisi ehkä lukea toiseenkin kertaan jossain sopivassa välissä.

Milan was raised in Southern California. She wrote her first book at the age of ten, and intended to be an author from a young age. After failing spectacularly at this, she changed her mind. She received a double major in mathematics and chemistry from Florida State University in 2000, and went on to get a Master's degree in Physical Chemistry from UC Berkeley in 2003, where she did research on computer models of glassy behavior.

She then went to the University of Michigan school of law, where she graduated summa cum laude, after which she clerked for Alex Kozinski of the 9th Circuit, followed by Retired Associate Justice Sandra Day O'Connor and Associate Justice Anthony Kennedy of the Supreme Court of the United States. She was a law professor at Seattle University School of Law for several years, teaching contracts and intellectual property, before quitting to write full-time.

Romaanissa kerrotaan siitä, miten vaikeaa naisen oli osallistua tieteelliseen tutkimukseen 1800-luvun Englannissa, ja miten vähäarvoisina naisia muutenkin yhteiskunnassa pidettiin, lähinnä vain miesten omaisuutena.

Violet on upea romaanin päähenkilö rikkinäisyydestään huolimatta, tai ehkä juuri siksi, eikä Sebastiankaan pahasti alakynteen jää, huolimatta siitä että hänen älyllinen kapasiteettinsa ei ole aivan Violetin tasoa.

Kirjassa on hauskoja kohtauksia, muun muassa se jossa Sebastian pitää tieteellistä luentoa orvokeista (Viola). Luennoidessaan hän tunnustaa rakkautensa Violetille ilman että kukaan muu yleisössä sitä tajuaa.

Välillä tekstistä tuli mieleen, että kirjoittaja hupailee lukijan kanssa piilottaen tarinaan tiedehistoriaan viittaavia koukkuja. Tämä on aikalailla toisin kuin esimerkiksi Dan Brownin kirjoissa, jotka ovat kuin kopioitu Wikipediasta, sillä erotuksella että Wikipedian teksti on sujuvampaa ja siellä on vähemmän virheitä. Milan ei tekstissään kompastele, ja viittaukset evoluutioteorian tilastolliseen perustaan hoituvat ikään kuin sivulauseissa, asiaa stressaamatta, ymmärryksellä briljeematta.
