Ashley Poston: Geekerella

Ashley Postonin romaanissa risteytetään tieteiskirjallisuuden fanien nörttimeininkiä chick lit -kirjallisuuden kliseisiin, unohtamatta toki sitä että juoni on lainattu Tuhkimo-sadusta: Geekerella (Quirk Books, 2017; ISBN 9781594749933).



En taatusti ole tämän kirjan keskeisintä kohdeyleisöä, mutta paikka paikoin kirjailija kuvasi oivaltavasti nuoren ihmisen ulkopuolisuuden kokemusta, sitä että omat kiinnostuksen kohteet ja ajatukset ovat aivan erilaisia kuin kenelläkään lähipiirissä.

Emilie Richards: Sisaren valinta

Jos sokeripitoisuutta mitattaisiin viihdekirjoissa, sijoittuisi Emilie Richardsin romaani kärkikahinoihin, siinä määrin siinä tiristellään kyyneleitä ja hehkutellaan romantiikalla: Sisaren valinta (Harlequin, 2012; suom. Meri Ala-Tauriala; ISBN 978-91-640-8499-6).



Romaani on ilmeisestikin osa kirjasarjaa, jossa on sattunut ja tapahtunut melkoisesti, ja lukijaa hämmensi iso joukko henkilöhahmoja ja juonenkäänteitä joista ilmeisesti on teossarjan aiemmissa osissa kerrottu. Kovin äkkiä tuli lukemisesta öklöhkö olo.

Sisarukset Kendra Taylor ja Jamie Dunkirk eivät ole olleet väleissä vuosiin. Kendra yritti lapsena olla äiti pikkusiskolleen Jamielle, mutta Jamie ajautui elämän karikoihin. Niistä selviydyttyään hän kahden lapsen mitä ihanimpana äitinä ja lupaavana arkkitehtina tarjoutuu auttamaan Kendraa ja tämän miestä Isaacia heidän elämänsä suurimmissa haaveissa. Kirjasta on tehty elokuvakin, mutta eipä sen katsominen kovin suuresti innosta. Teoksen teksti on sinänsä kohtalaisen sujuvaa, mutta vaikka seikkailua ja sattumuksia kirjassa kovasti piisaakin, lopulta jää miettimään mitä tästä kaikesta on opittavissa, jos mitään.

Tom King on kirjoittanut ja Michael Walsh sekä Gabriel Hernandez Walta piirtäneet sarjakuvakirjat, jossa robottiolento haluaa elää kuin ihminen ja rakennuttaa itselleen perheen elääkseen lähiössä ihan kuten naapurissa asuvat perheet.



Sarjakuvia on kehuttu, mutta kehut eivät yltäneet lukukokemukseen saakka. Ehkä pitäisi olla Marvel-sarjakuvakirjojen maailmaan syvällisesti perehtynyt jotta tarinoita pystyisi arvostamaan. Tuntui että tekijöillä jonkinlaista sanottavaa saattaa olla, mutta sarjakuvassa siitä ei ollut kuin ajoittaisia välähdyksiä, jos sitäkään.
