James Lee Burke: Three great novels - Robicheaux: the early years

James Lee Burken kirjoittamien Robicheaux-jännärien kolme ensimmäistä romaania on julkaistu yhtenä kirjana: Three great novels - Robicheaux: the early years (Orion, 2004; ISBN 0-75286-830-6).



Kirja sisältää kolme romaania: The neon rain, Heaven's prisoners ja Black cherry blues. Olin lukenut näistä aiemmin vain keskimmäisen, ja senkin väärässä järjestyksessä, myöhemmin ilmestyneiden romaanien jälkeen.

On myönnettävä, etten aluksi ollut erityisen innostunut romaanien lukemisesta, vaikka luku-urakkaa olin jo jonkin aikaa suunnitellut. Pienellä fontilla tiiviisti ladottu teksti teki lukemisesta raskaampaa kuin se muuten olisi ollut.

Tästä huolimatta kolme romaania tuli luettua perä-perää jokseenkin rivakasti, jotakuinkin yhden viikonlopun aikana. Samalla täytyy myöntää, että käsitykseni romaanien luonteesta muuttui melkolailla, ja aloin toisella tavalla ymmärtää sitä mitä Burke teoksillaan pyrkii sanomaan.

Päähenkilö Robicheaux ei todellakaan ole mikään puhtoinen sankarihahmo, vaan monella tapaa rajoittunut mies joka tekee virheitä toisensa perään, eikä tunnu niistä - eikä omasta itsestäänkään - juuri mitään oppivan. No, hengissä hän jotakuinkin selviää, vaikkakin usein sattuman kaupalla.

Antony Penrose: The Lives Of Lee Miller

Antony Penrose kertoo äitinsä elämäntarinan kirjassa The Lives Of Lee Miller (1988; ISBN 0-500-27509-2).



Lee Miller oli elämänsä aikana muun muassa valokuvamalli ja sotavalokuvaaja, ja sattumisia mahtui tähän elämään tavattoman paljon. Hänen poikansa Antony Penrose on tehnyt omanlaisensa elämäntyön järjestellessään äitinsä jäämistöä, muun muassa kymmeniätuhansia valokuvia.

Kirjassa todetaan asioita ottamatta niihin isommin kantaa, mutta rivien välistä voi lukea melkoisesti, sen verran rajuja ja kummallisia olivat Lee Millerin elämänvaiheet lapsuudesta vanhuuteen. Muitakin kirjoja hänestä on tarjolla, mutta tämä lienee niistä kaikkein lähimmältä havainnoitu.

To these are added many other photos that complement Penrose's highly readable biography of this uniquely talented artist. 171 duotone illustrations.

Michael Connelly: The crossing
