Ayize Jama-Everett: The entropy of bones

Ayize Jama-Everettin fantasiaromaani on kummallinen sekoitus toimintajännäriä ja spekulatiiviseen tieteiskirjallisuuteen vivahtavaa tematiikkaa: The entropy of bones (Small Beer Press, 2015; ISBN 978-1-61873-103-6).



Kirjan päähenkilö on nuori nainen, joka harjoittelee päivät pitkät taistelutaitoja, vaikka oikeastaan hänen pitäisi opiskella ja etsiä itselleen jotain ammattia. A young martial artist finds there is more to the world than she can kick, more than she can see. 'Normal' is not part of protagonist Chabi's world: she was raised on a houseboat in Sausalito, Calif., and has been mute from birth, but she discovers she can push her mental voice into people's minds. Faced with public school and its hazards, she asks a local martial arts master, Narayana, to teach her to fight. Narayana makes Chabi a weapon: a superhuman bar fighter and brawler. She's able to shatter skeletons with her understanding of the powers of entropy. Chabi uses her deadly skills first to protect a likable trio of marijuana farmers, then as a security guard for an impossibly rich hotel magnate who's as dangerous in his own way as Narayana.

Michelle Paver: Dark matter

Mark O'Sullivan: Crocodile tears

Mark O'Sullivanin jännärissä selvitellään rikkaiden ihmisten välisiä ihmissuhteita Dublinin kaduilla ja kodeissa: Crocodile tears (Transworld Ireland, 2014; ISBN 978-1-848-27156-2).



Kirjasta tuli kumma kyllä mieleen Cormoran Strike -dekkarien meininki, ehkä johtuen siitä että poliisi Leo Woods on saman tapainen haavoittunut sankari, jolla on ongelmia riittämiin, vähempikin riittäisi. Varsinainen rikostarina tarjoaa käänteen jos toisenkin, ja tässäkin vähemmän olisi saattanut olla enemmän.

Helmet-järjestelmässä sanotaan teoksen ikäsuosituksena "Recommended for older teens (16 and up)", mutta melkeinpä mietin voiko sarjakuvaa suositella minkään ikäisille. Toisaalta kerronnassa on myös omaperäisyyttä, ja piirrosjälki ei ole hassumpaa. Melkolailla ristiriitainen tuntu tästä kirjasta jäi.

Olen aina silloin tällöin yhden uuden Devlin-dekkarin lukenut, enkä tätä lainatessani jaksanut tarkistaa, onko tämä järjestyksessä seuraava jota en ole lukenut. Tarina kulki mallikkaasti, ja varmasti näiden kirjojen parissa tulee jatkossakin jännitettyä ja viihdyttyä. Lukemisessä jäi välistä teos The Rising, joka varmaankin olisi seuraavana vuorossa.

Declan Cleary's body has never been found, but everyone believes he was killed for informing on a friend more than 30 years ago.
