Brian McGilloway: The nameless dead

Brian McGillowayn jännärissä selvitellään Irlannin viime vuosikymmenten verisiä tapahtumia, ja melko lailla kivuliaalla tavalla: The nameless dead (Pan Books, 2012; ISBN 978-0-330-46086-6).



Olen aina silloin tällöin yhden uuden Devlin-dekkarin lukenut, enkä tätä lainatessani jaksanut tarkistaa, onko tämä järjestyksessä seuraava jota en ole lukenut. Tarina kulki mallikkaasti, ja varmasti näiden kirjojen parissa tulee jatkossakin jännitettyä ja viihdyttyä. Lukemisessä jäi välistä teos The Rising, joka varmaankin olisi seuraavana vuorossa.

Declan Cleary's body has never been found, but everyone believes he was killed for informing on a friend more than 30 years ago. Now the Commission for Location of Victims' Remains is following a tip-off that he was buried on the small isle of Islandmore, in the middle of the River Foyle. Amanda Quickin historiallisissa romaaneissa ei ole mitään erityisen omaperäistä, ellei siksi lueta jonkinlainen dekkarimeininki, sillä näissä kahdessa romaanissa selvitellään omituisia tapahtumia ja salaisuuksia. Muutamista yllätyksistä huolimatta teosten juonet ovat ennalta-arvattavia, eikä tekstikään kaikilta osin ole erityisen sujuvasti kirjoitettua.

Maya Rodalen historiallisissa viihderomaaneissa puhutaan tanssisalien seinäkukkasista, jotka ovat jääneet alakynteen englantilaisen yläluokan kovasti kilpailuilla avioliittomarkkinoilla. Kirjojen tarinat ovat täyttä huttua, mutta jonkin verran omaperäisyyttä kerronnassa silti on. Toisaalta saman tarinan toistaminen vähän eri kuosissa ei pidemmän päälle kanna. No, erityistä omaperäisyyttä ei ole teosten kansikuvissakaan.

Lempi Torppa: Jokaisen naisen kirja

Kirjastosta löytyy vuonna 1946 ilmestynyt teos Jokaisen miehen kirja, josta kirjoitin arvionkin. Tasapuolisuuden vuoksi lainasin myös vastaavasti otsikoidun naisnäkökulmaa tarjoavan teoksen: Jokaisen naisen kirja (Kivi, 1948; 6. täyd. painos). Teoksen toimittaja on Lempi Torppa - epäilin tätä jopa nimimerkiksi mutta erehdyin - ja kirjoittajina pitkä lista eri alojen asiantuntijoita (joista osa kirjoitti nimimerkillä).



Veikkaisin että teos on aikoinaan ollut kohtalainen myyntimenestys. Nykypäivän näkökulmasta tekstissä on melkolailla nostalgiaa. Elämme toisenlaisia aikoja, mutta toisaalta jotkin asiat eivät ehkä siltikään isosti ole muuttuneet.

Liane Moriarty: Hyvä aviomies

Liane Moriartyn romaanissa riittää salaisuuksia kerrassaan, sellaisia jotka voivat pirstoa koko elämän. Pala kerrallaan salaisuudet paljastuvat, ja ihmisten elämät eivät ole enää ennallaan: Hyvä aviomies (WSOY, 2014; suom. Helene Bützow; ISBN 978-951-0-40599-4).



Teoksen englanninkielinen nimi on The husband's secret, mikä kertoo paremmin siitä mistä on kyse. Tarinan keskiössä on kolme naista, joissa kaikilla on jotain menetettyä tai menetettävää, ja joiden elämät kietoutuvat toisiinsa.

Teksti avautuu pala kerrallaan, enkä ole vieläkään varma siitä pidinkö kertomisen tavasta. Tuntui siltä kuin kuuntelisi radiota jonka kanava vaihtuu satunnaisesti kesken kaiken, tyylilajista toiseen, aiheesta kolmanteen.

Sen virheen menin vielä tekemään, että luin teoksen lopusta kohdan jossa paljastetaan salaisuuksia, mikä tietysti vähensi lukemisen jännitystä. Toisaalta tästä huolimatta jaksoin lukea romaanin loppuun asti, mitä voinee pitää suosituksena tekstin laadulle.

Älykäs, tummalla huumorilla ja oletetulla murhamysteerillä säväyttävä lukuromaani kolmesta äidistä kertakaikkisen pirullisissa elämäntilanteissa. Cecilia löytää kirjeen josta kuoriutuu hänen miehensä musertava salaisuus. Tess taas kuulee miehensä ja ystävänsä rakastuneen toisiinsa, pakahduttavasti, joten kolmas pyörä, Tess, lähtee. Rachel on menettänyt tyttärensä ja epäilee nyt tietävänsä kuka hänet murhasi. Mies on sama, jota kohtaan Tess alkaa tuntea kiihkeää vetoa. Naiset kohtaavat Sydneyssä. Nauru ja kyyneleet tilkitsevät tarinat toisiinsa. Lukija nauraa arjen pannukakuille ja jo kohta vakavoituu suurten moraalisten kysymysten edessä. Onko parempi pitää totuus kätkettynä Pandoran lippaassa, jottei se vahingoita rakkaitasi?
