John Scalzin tieteisromaanisarjan kolmas osa jatkaa kahden ensimmäisen osan tarinaa, eikä kirjailijalla tunnu enää olevan intoa jäljellä: The last colony (Tor, 2015; ISBN 978-1-4472-9540-2).



Kirjasta - ja sen jälkisanoista - saa kuvan, että Scalzi puoleksi vastentahtoisesti kirjoitti romaanisarjaansa tämän kolmannen romaanin. Ongelmana on se, että mitään jännitettä tarinasta ei tunnu löytyvän.

Romaanisarjan ensimmäisestä osasta löytynyt omaperäisyys on kaluttu loppuun, päähenkilöt toimivat väkinäisesti ja juonessa on ammottavia aukkoja. Avaruuden muukalaisrodut ovat kaikkea muuta kuin muukalaisia, heidän repliikkinsä kun ovat pikemminkin karikatyyrejä USA:n eri osavaltioiden ihmisten puheenparsista.

Kovin omaperäisenä tarinaa ei voi pitää, vaikka muutamia yllätyksiä juoneen onkin punottu. Varsin mallikas romaani, mutta jonkinlaista väsymystä kirjoittajalla tuntui aiheeseensa olevan, varsinkin teoksen loppupuolella.

John Scalzi: Old man's war

Luin John Scalzin tieteisromaanin melkolailla heti sen ilmestymisen jälkeen, olisiko ollut vuonna 2005 tai 2006, ja luin teossarjan kaksi seuraavaakin osaa, kunnes innostukseni lopahti. Nyt ajattelin kokeilla uudestaan, ja aloitin alkuperäisestä romaanista: Old man's war (Tor, 2015; ISBN 978-1-4472-9537-2).



Siitä ei pääse mihinkään, että tämä ensimmäinen romaani on varsin onnistunut, varsinkin teoksen alkupuolella kun ei vielä olla avaruudessa taistelemassa muukalaisia vastaan. Kuvaus vanhan miehen päätöksestä liittyä sotavoimiin taustoittuu mainiosti, kuvauksella yhteiskunnasta joka on jollakin tavalla pysähdystilassa, samaan aikaan kun ulkoavaruudessa tapahtuu mitä kummallisimpia asioita.

Kirjan loppupuolella alkoi tulla esiin niitä haasteita mitä kirjasarjan myöhemmissä osissa on huomattavassa määrin, erityisesti se että Scalzin kuvaamat avaruuden muukalaiset tuntuvat kovasti muistuttavan jenkkiläisten toimintaelokuvien hahmoja, mitään erityisen outoa tai kummallista ei siltä rintamalta tunnu löytyvän. Mutta romaani muistutti mieleen että parhaimmillaan Scalzi osaa kirjoittaa.
