Antti Huttunen ja Touko Kauppinen: Retkipaikka

Kirjastosta löytyi vallan mainio kirja suomalaisista retkeilykohteista, toimittajina Antti Huttunen ja Touko Kauppinen: Retkipaikka (Karttakeskus, 2015; ISBN 978-952-266-347-4).



Kirjassa on mahtava paketti mielenkiintoisia ja myös vähemmän tunnettuja retkikohteita, esimerkkinä Kuopion Ritoniemi, joka osoittautui juuri niin mahtavaksi paikaksi kuin opaskirja antoi olettaa.

Näinä päivinä ihmiset ehkä luontevimmin etsivät tietoa netistä, mutta kirjassa on vielä etunsa, varsinkin tällaisessa oppaassa josta nopeasti pystyy selaamaan esiin kiinnostavia kohteita vaikkapa Savon suunnalta.

Yhteistyössä Suomen suosituimman retkeilyblogin Retkipaikka.fi:n kanssa toteutettu. Monipuolisia retkeilykohteita eri puolilta Suomea paikallisten retkeilijöiden kirjoittamina. Noin 80 pääkohdetta, lisäksi esitellään noin 200 muuta retkeilypaikkaa. Monipuolisesti erityyppisiä kohteita synkästä Artjärven rotkosta Paavolan satumaiseen tammeen, Saraakallion kalliomaalauksista Lemböten kappeliin ja Manamansalon retkeilyseutuihin. Neal Stephenson: Seveneves

Neal Stephensonin tieteisromaanissa on 867 sivua, ja tarina alkaa ei sen pienemmästä asiasta kuin maapallon tuhoutumisesta parin vuoden sisällä. Miten ihmiskunta selviää? Seveneves (The Borough Press, 2015; ISBN 978-0-00-813251-4).



Neal Stephenson on sisällyttänyt romaaniinsa melkoisen määrän teemoja, alkaen siitä että Kuu räjähtää kappaleiksi ja palaset alkavat putoilla maapallolle. Tiedossa on tuhansien vuosien jakso jolloin maapallo on elinkelvoton ja ihmisen on tultava toimeen avaruudessa.

Kirjan kerronta on polveilevaa, ja kirjailija on selvästi innostunut aiheestaan, olkoon kyse sitten kaaosteoriasta tai elämän edellytyksistä avaruusasemalla.

Ihmisten kuvaajana kirjailija ei ole erityisen uskottava, vaikka mukaan onkin leivottu kehystarina jossa politikoidaan avaruudessa henkiinjääneiden ihmisten keskuudessa. Kirjan loppua kohden kiinnostavuus raukesi, enkä jaksanut lukea teosta edes puoliväliin.

Fran Wilde: Updraft

Fran Wilden fantasiaromaanissa ihmiset lentävät selkään kiinnitetyillä siivillä, käyden kauppaa ja kaksintaisteluja: Updraft (TOR, 2015; ISBN 978-0-7653-7783-8).



Romaani tuntui suunnatun nuorille lukijoille, eikä tarina kulkenut ollenkaan hassummin romaanin alkupuolella, jossa pikku hiljaa paljastui millaisesta maailmasta fantasiaromaanissa on kyse. Romaanin loppupuolella alkoi juonesta paljastua turhan paljon aukkoja, kun sattuma seurasi toistaan, enkä jaksanut lukea teosta loppuun saakka.

Kirit Densira cannot wait to pass her wingtest and begin flying as a trader by her mother's side, being in service to her beloved home tower and exploring the skies beyond. Jim Butcher: The aeronaut's windlass

Jim Butcherin fantasiaromaanissa höyrykäyttöiset ilmalaivat käyvät taisteluja ja vallanpitäjät juonittelevat toistensa pään menoksi: The aeronaut's windlass (Orbit, 2015; ISBN 978-0-356-50365-3).



Parasta romaanissa oli kohtalaisen omaperäinen maailma, jossa oli karheaa kauneutta. Tarina sen sijaan oli tuttu lukemattomista fantasiaromaaneista, mutta toisaalta Butcher onnistui muutamaan kertaan yllättämään kohtalaisen näppärästi, ja voi hyvin olla että tätä kirjasarjaa tulee luettua eteenkin päin.

Suzanne Enoch: A matter of scandal jne.

Suzanne Enoch tuntuu kirjoittaneen historiallisia viihderomaaneja hengästyttävään tahtiin, ja juuri mikään tämän tyylilajin juonenkäänne ei tunnu olevan hänelle mahdoton sisällyttää polveileviin tarinoihin, joissa on monenlaista harmia rakastavaisten onnea varjostamassa. Omaperäisyyttä ei suuressa määrin näistä kirjoista löydy, eivätkä lukijat varmaan sitä suuresti odotakaan.
