Julia London tarjoaa skandaalinkäryisiä viihderomaaneja 1800-luvun Englannista. Nancy J. Cohen: Dead roots

Nancy J. Cohenin viihteellinen salapoliisiromaani jäi sivulle 7, sillä siitä eteenpäin tekstin lukeminen oli kertakaikkiaan mahdotonta: Dead roots (Kensington, 2012; ISBN 978-0-75828-809-7).



En tiedä olisiko kirjailija mennyt sekaisin siitä, mitä "mystery"-sana tarkoittaa, mutta ainakin itse ajattelin sen tarkoittavan rikoksen selvittelyä jotakuinkin älyllisillä keinoilla.

Mutta kirjailija marssitti esiin selvännäkijän, joka ennusteli kauheita tapahtuvaksi, ja vielä alleviivasi asiaa useaan otteeseen, jolloin totesin että tämä kirja ei kyllä varmasti ole minua varten. Harvinaisen selvä - tai siis pikemminkin epäselvä - tapaus.

Victoria Aveyard: Red queen

Victoria Aveyard kertoo fantasiaromaanissa kahtiajakautuneesta luokkayhteiskunnasta, jossa veren väri määrittää kuulutko työläisiin vai vallanpitäjiin: Red queen (HarperCollins, 2015; ISBN 978-0-06-231065-1).



Teos aloittaa kirjasarjan. Ensimmäisessä romaanissa 17-vuotias Mare-tyttö seikkailee itsensä vallan huipulle, päästen näkemään miten hyväosaiset elämäänsä elävät.

Aveyardin hahmottelemassa yhteiskunnassa osalla ihmisistä on supersankarisarjakuvista tuttuja yli-inhimillisiä taitoja, ja nämä "hopeiset" pitävät "punaisia" vallassaan. Yhteiskuntaa riivaa sota, ja kaikki punaiset 18-vuotiaat joilla ei ole työpaikkaa, joutuvat rintamalle.

Romaanissa mennään välillä hurjaa vauhtia eteenpäin, ja kirjailija ei paljon selittele tapahtumisia, ja moneen kertaan juonenkäänteet ovat siinä määrin uskomattomia että lukunautinnosta ei voinut puhua. Toisaalta kuvaus valtapelistä sekä vallankaappauksen valmistelusta oli paikka paikoin kiinnostavaa, tosin tarinan elementit ovat kymmeniä kertoja kierrätettyä tavaraa.

Kirjan lukeminen jäi kesken, mutta luin kuitenkin kaksi viimeistä kappaletta, jotta selvisi miten kirjan ensimmäinen osa päättyy. Oikeastaan oli harmi että kirjan niin sanottu suuri paljastus selviää lukijalle jo melkoisen varhain, enkä jaksanut takkuilla koko kirjaa läpi nähdäkseni osuinko oikeaan.

John Williams: Butcher's Crossing

John Williamsin romaani on länkkäri, jotakuinkin paras koskaan kirjoitettu: Butcher's Crossing (Bazar, 2016; suom. Ilkka Rekiaro; ISBN 978-952-279-207-5).



Mieleen tulee vain yksi toinen kirja, jossa länkkärin kuosissa kerrotaan yhtä lailla ihmisyyttä syvälle viiltävä tarina, ja se on Cormac McCarthyn pääteos, romaani Veren ääriin, eli Lännen punainen ilta. No, muutamassa Elmore Leonardin teoksessa on myös kovaa yritystä, mutta ihan tällaiseen napakymppiin Leonard ei osu.

Kuten romaanissa Stoner John Williams ei selittele, vaan kertoo toteavasti asioista siten kuin ne tapahtuvat, ja lukija joutuu todistajaksi elämälle jota kirja kuvaa, ja kuvaus on sillä tavalla tiukasti osuvaa että välillä oli pakko pitää taukoja. Siinä määrin romaanin teksti tuntui hiertyvän lukijan nahan alle että tekstin lukeminen teki kipeää.

Kuvaus villin lännen viimeisistä ajoista on uljas kertomus ihmisen yrityksestä etsiä omaa olemustaan, tavoittaa omaa itseään, ja samalla kirja kertoo yhtä lailla hyvyydestä kuin pahuudesta, siitä miten ihminen yrittäessään elää elämäänsä ajautuu ristiriitaan maailman todellisuuden kanssa, tai sanoisiko niin että lukija joutuu todistamaan sitä kuilua joka on ihmisen tavoitteiden ja odotusten sekä häntä ympäröivän todellisuuden välillä.

Kansas, 1870. Nuori Will Andrews jättää yliopiston kesken ja saapuu pieneen Butcher's Crossingin kaupunkiin keskelle ei mitään. Hän haluaa kokea Ralph Waldo Emersonin innoittamana alkuperäisen suhteen luontoon, mutta keskilännen kovapintaisten miesten kansoittama onnenonkijoiden kaupunki vaikuttaa tylyltä. Tasha Alexander: A fatal waltz

Tasha Alexander jatkaa Lady Emily -kirjasarjaansa mallikkaasti. Tällä kertaa matkustetaan Wieniin, jossa kahvilakulttuuri kukoistaa mutta samaan aikaan vehkeillään vallankumousta: A fatal waltz (C & R Crime, 2014; ISBN 978-1-4721-1134-0).



Pidin romaanista, eikä tälläkään kertaa tuntunut siltä että samaa tarinaa olisi kerrottu uudelleen ja uudelleen. Tällä kertaa paljastetaan Emilyn sulhasen Colinin henkilöhistoriasta uusia asioita, ja entisen rakastetun tuleminen mukaan kuvioihin mutkistaa päähenkilöiden välejä melkoisesti. Mutta jälleen kerran romaani onnistuu välttämään viihderomaanien tyypilliset karikot. Kirjailija tekee päähenkilöistä omaleimaisia, uskottavan oloisia ihmisiä.
